This tragic photo was taken by Dave Hally, of his wife and 4-year-old daughter, heading off to their dream family holiday, onboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, 17th of July, 2014.
The plane, bound from Amsterdam to Kuala Lampur, was deliberately shot down with a handheld rocket-launcher by pro-Russian rebels as it flew over eastern Ukraine. A Buk ground-to-air missile, which had been launched from an area east from the aircraft, detonated outside the aircraft just above the cockpit to the left. An explosive decompression occurred, resulting in both the cockpit and tail sections tearing away from the middle portion of the fuselage. All three sections disintegrated as they fell towards the ground. All 298 passengers and crew on board lost their lives.
