When President Eisenhower visited Japan in 1960

When President Eisenhower visited Japan in 1960, the Japanese government had very real fears of a possible assassination attempt on the American leader, as thousands of angry anti-Eisenhower protestors lined the streets of Tokyo.

The Japanese government's reaction was a simple one- Make a phone call to the Yamaguchi-gumi, Japan's largest and most influential Yakuza clan, and request their assistance.

The Yakuza were honoured, and not only accepted the request and sent, literally, thousands of soldiers and bodyguards to aid the President, but also sent their personal heart surgeon to be with him, just in case.
